CMC Stories with our Consultant, Rhiannon.
CMC Community
We like to do things a bit differently at CMC.
We don’t believe that a one size solution fits all the needs of our clients. And we don’t believe that one size fits all when it comes to our people. We positively encourage and embrace the diversity of thought, backgrounds, educations, and industries that shape our team, and which bring different and valuable perspectives to both our company and our clients.
To celebrate our talent and showcase that you don’t need to have a traditional management consultancy background to be a successful management consultant, meet one of our consultants, Rhiannon Wand.
When Rhiannon first joined CMC she didn’t have a background in business analysis, but in the two years that she’s been with us, it has been amazing to watch her grow into an experienced business analyst – from trainee to junior, and now to consultant level.
Here she shares her story of her personal and professional growth, which has led her to supporting many of our clients with her BA skills.
What was your background before joining CMC?
I started out temping in the Supply Chain for a well known beer distributor. I think this is where I started to use BA skills, but I didn’t realise that at the time. It wasn’t the direction I was expecting with my Psychology degree and MA in Terrorism, Security and Society. But I really enjoyed it (and the free beer)!
What made you change career direction?
I’ve always wanted a career where I could make a difference in some way, and I hadn’t felt like I’d got that in previous jobs. After a lengthy discussion, a friend said “it sounds like you want to be a BA, Rhi”. So I went home and Googled “what is business analysis”, and that was that!
How has your background shaped where you are now?
I know it’s cliché but I really think that when ‘one door closes another door opens’. I’ve always had a plan for my career and life, but have also been able to pivot when a door closes (or doesn’t feel very open). Being able to do this is quite synonymous with being a BA, and it’s what makes me love the challenge.
What 3 things have you learnt about business analysis?
I’m not sure I could identify 3 as I’ve learnt so much, and continue to learn so much. But I would say that one of my key takeaways is: Active listening skills are invaluable.
How have you grown since joining CMC?
I feel like I’ve developed exponentially since joining CMC. Within just over 2 years I’ve gone from not really knowing what business analysis is nor how to apply it – to delivering high quality business analysis to several clients.
