CMC Stories with our Senior Consultant, Jonathan.
CMC Community
We like to do things a bit differently at CMC.
We don’t believe that a one size solution fits all the needs of our clients. And we don’t believe that one size fits all when it comes to our people. We positively encourage and embrace the diversity of thought, backgrounds, educations, and industries that shape our team, and which bring different and valuable perspectives to both our company and our clients.
To celebrate our talent and showcase that you don’t need to have a traditional management consultancy background to be a successful management consultant, meet one of our senior consultants, Jonathan.
Jonathan started his career in the Royal Air Force before joining CMC, and here he shares how his experiences and skills have shaped his professional growth as a business analyst, as well as his three biggest learnings along the way.
What was your background before joining CMC?
I served 16 years in the Royal Air Force within Personnel, although this included a number of projects that were deployed to operations, and more routine HR software support.
What made you change career direction?
After leaving the RAF I was quite happy to remain in HR/resourcing … however, I became interested in business analysis and CMC encouraged me to start looking at the BA pathway with the BCS; my curiosity for something new was piqued and I’ve not looked back!
How has your background shaped where you are now?
There are so many transferrable skills from the military, and a personnel department, that it’s tricky to pick them all out. If I was pressed then I’d say the ability to confidently interview and gain the trust of client staff has certainly helped shape my BA style.
What are your 3 take-outs about business analysis?
Business analysis is all about the people! If they do not value what’s being proposed then the project won’t realise its full potential. My 3 take-outs are that collaboration, compromise, and consensus should be achieved before large sums of money are invested or the ROI suffers.
How have you grown since joining CMC?
I am now a Senior Consultant who loves business analysis (and business change), and also a professional member of the BCS. Working with our clients, mentoring our new BAs and continually developing my own skills in the profession has been an amazing experience over the last 9 years.
